Building strength through unity since 1950

Our local has been a driving force for workers’ progress in the Greater Hamilton, Niagara, Brant and Kitchener-Waterloo regions since it was first chartered on June 18th, 1950. Through years of hard work and perseverance, our local has improved the lives of local labourers through collective bargaining, member benefits and a well-funded pension plan.

a modern, single-story commercial building on a clear day. The structure has a mix of concrete and glass elements, with large windows lined along the side. A prominent cylindrical black structure is attached to beige brick walls near the front. Above the entrance, a rectangular sign displays the name of the establishment in bright orange and dark lettering. The area surrounding the building includes a paved driveway and a few parking spaces, with minimal landscaping, featuring trimmed grass and a few trees in the distance. The sky is mostly clear with some streaks of clouds.

Industrial Sector Workers

United workforce,
stronger together

Today, LiUNA Local 837 represents over 6,000 workers in the Greater Hamilton, Niagara, Brant and Kitchener-Waterloo regions. In addition to roughly 3,976 workers in the skilled trades, our local also represents approximately 977 members from the industrial sector (cleaners, caretakers, factory workers, food processors and security employees). We believe that by branching out to support all forms of labour, we can strengthen our position and negotiate more effectively for our members.

Built on the hard-work of those who’ve come before us

LiUNA Local 837 owes its success to visionary leaders like Enrico Henry Mancinelli, who joined as a timekeeper with Frid Construction and became a pivotal union figure in 1959. Alongside colleagues Tony La Macchia, Sam DeLuca, Larry Curto, Nick Scibetta, and Pasquale Zavarella, he organized thousands of immigrant workers and, as Business Manager, launched the first Labourers Pension Plan in 1971.
