Local 837 member Nese has been part of the union for eight years, building a career in the trades while gaining valuable skills, job security, and the support that comes with union membership. From working outdoors to knowing she can rely on strong safety standards, benefits, and a pension for the future, Nese shares what being part of Local 837 means to her.
In this member spotlight, Nese talks about what inspired her to join the union, the advice she would give to those just starting out in the trades, and why safety, opportunity, and community are so important in this industry.
When did you first join local 837?
I have been a union member for 8 years now. Becoming a union member was very important to me and it has given me a safe working environment, a representative, collective agreements and one voice.
What inspired you to join local 837?
My husband inspired me to join the union as he works in construction
What do you enjoy most about being part of local 837?
I enjoy working outside the most. As well as having a safe working environment and having the opportunity to learn so many new skills.
What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in the trades?
The advice I would give to someone who is just starting out in the trades is that the most important thing you should focus on is safety. This starts with thinking about everything before you start and think about what it is you are doing. At the end of the day we all want to go home safely to our families.
What does the pension plan mean for your peace of mind in retirement?
Another very important part of being part of the union is the benefits and pension plan. This is because when you are retired you have income and can live your life comfortably. When I am retired I am most looking forward to travelling somewhere hot with no snow, beaches and waves!
What impact has local 837 had on your community?
I think one of the most important things that Local 837 does for our community is having the scholarship fund so our children can apply and attend post secondary education. Also, they frequently donate to local hospitals and charity organizations which makes me proud to be part of this union.
