Member Spotlight

This month’s member spotlight is George! Scroll through to learn more about how George got started with Local 837 and advice he gives to those just getting started.

How did you become a Labourer?

George: I joined Local 837 back in 2020. I was set up with training and advice and my career really took off from there.

What difference has being part of a union made in your life?

George: I grew up working in the restaurant industry. In the restaurant industry there isn’t really an opportunity to learn a lot of technical skills like you would working as a labourer on a job site. With the training and experience on the jobs I have done, it has given me a lot of confidence not only in my career but in my personal life as well.

How long have you been a member and what inspired you to join?

George: I am currently going into my sixth year as a labourer. What inspired me to join the union was the job security and the training provided. The training can help with so many of the jobs that we do.

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in the trades?

George: Believe it or not, the best advice I would give to someone who is just starting out in the trades is to just show up to work. Showing up to work and doing your job while putting in the hours.

What does the pension plan mean for your peace of mind in retirement?

George: For me the pension plan gives me peace of mind, it allows me to be able to continue the lifestyle my family and I have after retiring, while also ensuring my kids futures are taken care of.

How has local 837 impacted your community?

George: Local 837 was generous enough to sponsor my sons soccer team. Also, just the events that they put on, especially the ones for my family such as the Christmas party and the Labour Day parade. Also, seeing LiUNA posted across the city makes you feel like you are working for a company you can really appreciate.
