Construction Health & Safety Awareness
The Construction Health and Safety Awareness Training program was designed to meet the Ministry of Labours standard for construction workers.
This program is divided into four modules delivered over a minimum of six and a half hours. Both the content and timing is stated in the standard.
WHSC’s program is filled with activities and worksheets to break up this content heavy program and ensure learning objectives are met. Module one provides instruction on the legal framework and the role of workplace parties. This module is delivered over 45 minutes. Participants will learn about the act and the construction regulations and go over the duties of Constructors, employers, supervisors and workers. Participants will learn about the workers’ rights to know, participate and refuse. In addition to the standardized content, the WHSC’s program has a second session that is optional. In this one hour session participants will learn how to read health and safety legislation, learn and understand the intent behind certain words and punctuation. Participants will demonstrate their ability to locate specific content in the construction regulation while completing a worksheet. This session will make the entire program seven and a half hours.
Module two will cover hazard identification, assessment and control. In this 45 minute module, participants will learn what a hazard is, how to assess the hazard and how to apply the best control using the hierarchy of control. Participants will demonstrate controlling a hazard in class using a worksheet and tools. This activity will also be rated by the effectiveness of the control used.
Module three is delivered over two hours. This module called “Common Hazards and Conditions on Construction Projects” provides general information on common hazards found on construction projects. Again workers will participate in classroom discussions and complete activities to confirm the learning objectives are met. Common hazards such as slip, trips and falls, access and egress, housekeeping, environment, elevating work platforms, and confined spaces.
Module four “Common High Hazards on Construction Projects”, this module is delivered over three hours. Participants will discuss common high hazards and their controls. High hazards such as electricity, stored energy, heights, mobile equipment and vehicles and excavations. Once program is successfully completed, participants will receive a record of training.
